A Gentle Boy

Robert Hawkins was a quiet, studious, gentle boy. He was quite impressionable and easily troubled. Robert never recovered from his parents’ divorce, and had a strained relationship with his mother and domineering stepfather. The boy spent most of his time reading in his room. He didn’t have many friends and kept to himself to avoid bullies.

After graduating from high school, Robert moved out to his college dorm and concentrated on his studies. He got a number of scholarships to pay for college and supported himself by working at McDonalds as an assistant manager. At 19, he had a real girlfriend for the first time in his life, and seemed happy.

On a busy day three weeks before Christmas, at a huge bustling shopping mall in an affluent area of Omaha, Nebraska, Robert Hawkins opened fire in a department store with the AK-47 he had taken from his stepfather’s gun collection. Thousands of panicked shoppers ran screaming; many hid in dressing rooms. Nevertheless, Hawkins managed to shoot eight to death, and wound a number of people, before he turned the gun on himself and blew out his brains.

No one knew what prompted this deadly outburst, but police recovered notes from Hawkins that were expected to shed some light on the reasons behind his breakdown. It has been speculated that his well hidden troubled psyche ‘snapped’ following his job loss and breakup with girlfriend.
