Shopping Mall Solution for Depression
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette columnist Gene Collier wrote in an article entitled "The Hard Football Educate Knocks, "the mall (Ross Park, a property of Simon, in Pittsburgh, PA) was" a place of healing for me. "
The article discusses the relationship between head injury and mental illness football and my book, " Blessed bipolar disorder, "90% of which was written in the food court of Ross Park Mall.
I played football in high school and as a freshman at Georgia Tech in 1980. During my career, I was diagnosed with two concussions. Eight years later, he was hospitalized diagnosed with major depression. A year after that, he was again hospitalized and diagnosed with bipolar disorder.
Mr. Collier is correct. The Mall (Ross Park, in particular) has been "a place of healing" to me. So, I sat in the food court bit and tried to figure out what specifically is so emotionally therapeutic shopping.
Here's what I did:
1. View people do not know. How is it therapeutic? When I'm out of people who do not know, I do not see that I'm miserable. Therefore, I force myself to look moderately happy or at least well. And sooner or later, just look better than I feel it makes me feel better.
2. The Getting Out Between life while feeling half dead. I was in a state of shock after losing a lawsuit that had consumed much of my time attention and energy for more than four years. I had thought that the loss devastated me. Finally I forced my self surprised the house and did so with Ross Park Mall, I was a little surprised to discover that despite my loss, people were going on with life – and life. And see and feel the life force energy the mall (!) made me realize that I was alive and had a life to live. At that point I changed. I knew that despite my loss, God had given me a great life – and all I need.
3. Being able to choose whether to interact or just being there. Besides being among the people and re-engage with life in the mall, I can choose to interact with people or just to hang out without being judged. That makes the mall emotionally safe place for a person with emotional problems to try to return to the game. And back in the game – for sure – helps to lift depression.
4. Shopping facilities are aesthetically pleasing places. Shopping facilities are designed specifically to be attractive to the customer. Are made to look, feel, and sound nice and pleasant for the people who frequent it. That makes for an environment stimulating. And when they were buried face down on the couch with the lights and shadows produced by a few days, you need a stimulating environment. Shopping centers, provided the environment.
5. Friendly and helpful staff. Surprise! Surprise! Mall employees are motivated to sell property and services. Therefore, if you want to succeed, they treat you well. They will provide "service with a smile." And receive a smile – even if it is forced and coercive – it feels good. It could even lead to return a semi-forced smile. And once the ball is rolling, which is in danger of wondering what happened with depression.
6. The mental stimulation. Yes, believe it or not, shopping can be challenging for mind. When I was in law school, I went to the food court of shopping centers to read the cases and prepare for class. Just being around my brain activity center lighting – instead of cracking up. On the contrary, studying in the library felt like being in prison. And I've written 90% of my book in the courtyard of meals Ross Park Mall. A brain up on is almost the opposite of a depressed mind. And the center does it for me.
Therefore, I sincerely thank Simon Malls to be, as columnist Gene Collier said, one of my "places of healing." Give it a try. Life is happening there! Yes, the mall. And it's a safe place – at your own pace – back to life. Especially if your feeling half dead. (I hope someday you will see me hosting My Radio Show there.)
