5 Steps to Using Affiliate Networks to Find Products to Sell Online

Affiliate marketing is the fastest way to find products to sell online.  All it takes is a couple of minutes to sign up, and you’ll have access to hundreds of products and services that you can promote.  Although quick, you need to know how to take the right steps if you’re just starting out.

Working with an affiliate network may look like a no-brainer, but most new affiliates take the wrong approach and end up losing money in their advertising campaigns.  If you want to avoid mistakes and get started in the right direction, here are five steps to follow.

Step 1: Build up a list of products or services.

Most affiliates begin by picking any random product or service and start promoting it.  Instead, you should build a list of products and services that look promising.  It’s a good idea to start marketing to a niche that you are familiar with.  It will give you a head start on research and also give you an idea of how to market to that audience.

The list is important because not all promotions will be a winner. You may find that certain markets are too competitive and others aren’t searched enough in the search engines.  Don’t start out by putting all your eggs in one basket.

Step 2: Start by researching the product or service.

After you’ve built a list, it’s time to make that list smaller.  Come up with a keyword list that best describes each product or service.  Then go to Google and look for the number of searches conducted in the last month.  That will let you know if the product or service is popular enough for promotion.

Again, try to start by promoting something you’re interested in or knowledgeable about, as that will help you take action and increase your chances of success.  The research will ultimately show which products and services in your list is worth promoting.

Step 3: Look at the type of payout being offered.

The next step is to think about how you’re going to market the product.  Are you going to use PPC, SEO, email marketing, banner ads?  Chances are your marketing method will cost you money so take some time to see the advertising costs in relation to the payout.  For example, you may lose money on the first sale but if there is a recurring commission, you may make a profit by the second month.

In general, take a look at how much you will earn for every sale.  You will get an idea of how much you need to sell to make your advertising campaign profitable.  A good guideline is to use a 1% conversion rate to calculate your numbers.

Step 4: Grab the marketing material and ask the merchant for help.

Most of the time, the merchant will supply you with marketing material you can use in your promotions.  This can be in the form of banner ads, email ads, PPC ads, landing pages, and more.  Try to see if you can alter the ads a little bit to make it more personal and better suited to your target market

Also, contact the merchant if you want more help.  The merchant may tell you what works and what doesn’t.  He may even go as far as telling you what other affiliates are doing to promote his business with great success.

Step 5: Launch your promotion.

The last step is launching your promotion.  The best advice you can take is to test and track everything.  This will allow you to see which of your campaigns are profitable and which ones are costing you money.  Not all your campaigns will be successful but with proper tracking and testing, you’ll be able to build a list of successful promotions.

Again, affiliate marketing is the fastest way to sell products to sell online, but you have to make sure you take the right steps.  Following these five steps will allow you to get started as an affiliate without losing unnecessary money and time.
